Strong Outing for Blacksburg at Roanoke's Fundraiser Weekend

It's winner take all next week in the 2009 Virginia Rugby Union (VRU) Senior Men's Division III competition after Blacksburg defeated Blackwater in Roanoke today. Roanoke Rugby generously hosted the match as part of its "B Cup" breast cancer fundraising event. Blacksburg and Blackwater's match was the second of three on the day, with Roanoke playing Virginia first and a special exhibition match being held third to wrap up the event.

Blackwater put up game opposition with very physical and enthusiastic play, but Blacksburg had a bit more fortune getting points on the board and carried the scoreline. Coach Jon Conrad named blind side flanker Eric Jackson man of the match for his big defense and phenomenal work rate. Just as importantly, tight forward Max Appleby walked away from the event with a commemorative pink jersey for raising a large amount of money to help Roanoke's cause. Blacksburg forwards John Overstreet and Jon Post also played in the exhibition match.

Blacksburg thanks Blackwater for a quality match and thanks Roanoke for including Blacksburg in the weekend's great fundraising event. Now attention turns to the final match of 2009 against Virginia, which will decide who wins the 2009 VRU championship and receives top seeding in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union Senior Men's Division III knockout matches.
