Blacksburg Overcomes Rain and Indiscretions
A wet day made for some generally sloppy play from Blacksburg in their second match of the Virginia Rugby Union Senior Men's Division III season, but the side showed enough composure to get by Roanoke 25-13 at home today.
Blacksburg ran in three tries, kicked a pair of penalty goals, and added two conversions, while Roanoke notched a pair of unconverted tries and a drop goal on the day. Blacksburg's players made it hard for themselves, though, earning three yellow cards on the day (Roanoke saw one as well) and giving up more than a few unnecessary penalties. Tight forward Max Appleby was named man of the match by coach Chuck Rockwell for displaying reliability and discipline on a day when the latter was at a premium.
The silver lining to the rainclouds for Blacksburg was that the cards were for errors of misplaced enthusiasm rather than clear cynicism, but Blacksburg will certainly be looking for a less choppy outing onthe road next week against Virginia Beach. Roanoke was unable to present opposition for a developmental match, so Blacksburg's reserve side will be chomping at the bit for a match after the undesired week off.
